History/Biography: Shelford Darton was born August 21, 1887 in West Derby, England. He married Elsie Alice Kelly in Prince Rupert in June 1914. Elsie journeyed from Lancashire, England to Prince Rupert to marry Shelford and the couple lived in Prince Rupert until 1953. Shelford worked as an accountant at Canadian Fish and Cold Storage and at B.C. Packers. The family lived at 657 5th Avenue East, 411 Green Street, 515 Eberts Street, and 1022 1st Avenue West. Shelford died on November 23, 1953 at age 66. Elsie died on November 6, 1985 at age 98.
Scope & Content: The collection consists of 52 photographs in Prince Rupert and Northwest British Columbia (1914-1952). It includes photographs and postcards of harbour views, the Isolation Hospital in Prince Rupert, Canadian Fish and Cold Storage (1914), airplanes from the Round the World Flight (1924), bridge to the Quarantine Hospital on Dodge Island, pleasure boats such as the "Hazel" and "Florence B" and one belonging to Stanley Isaacson, S.S. Prince George, S.S. Malaspina, Telkwa, Hudson Bay Mountain, Kitwanga, glacier near Stewart, sand dunes at Tlell, Bulkley Valley and Skeena River (1952).
